Because he has to experience it himself. The antagonist Zaroff, although well-mannered and a cruel character. His only purpose in life is to stop boredom by inventing/doing a cruel hunting game. This aspect of General Zaroff's character develops gradually over his lifetime. He satisfies his search for fun by hunting animals. When it stops getting entertaining he switches to humans. At the end of the story, we all wonder if Rainsford become the General. He probably left the Island while gaining the tittle of a General, or he probably left the island and forget about everything happened. What happens to his mind is Predictable.
